Anyone who follows photography competitions would know the name Martin Broen. His images have earned top honors in numerous contests—not just those dedicated to underwater photography. While Martin is best known for his breathtaking cave diving photography, his portfolio extends to wrecks, wildlife, and even macro shots, all of which have received prestigious awards.
So, what is his secret? As a designer of innovative products, Martin applies the design thinking methodology to his photography, cross-pollinating techniques and ideas to craft truly unique underwater images.
In this talk, Martin revealed how creative problem-solving, experimentation, and iterative refinement helped him produce never-seen-before, award-winning photographs. He also explained his underwater panorama technique, which allows him to capture immersive, wide-angle stories of the underwater world. Finally, Martin will shared insights from his journey into publishing an underwater photography book, and how it aims at helping protect the unique cave systems of Mexico.
Meet your speaker
Martin Broen is an award-winning photographer, proficient technical diver, and explorer. He leverages his design sensibility as creator of experiences to craft one-of-a-kind images that encapsulate the exquisite beauty of the planet and its inhabitants, aiming to inspire awareness and foster conservation efforts.
His photographic works have been featured in numerous magazines and newspapers, earning him over 50 prestigious photography awards. He is a three-time DPG Masters B&W Winner and has twice received Best of Show (2023 & 2022). In 2024, he won the UPY Wreck Category, and in 2022, he placed second in the Epson Pano Awards. That same year, he also received the Nature Discovery of the Year, Speleophotography Grand Prize, Black & White Photo of the Year, World of Archeology Winner, and Landscape Photograph of the Year. In 2021, he was named Exploration Photographer of the Year, amongst further accolades.
Originally from Argentina and now based in New York, Martin has designed hundreds of innovative products and holds over 130 innovation patents. His expertise in problem-solving allows him to creatively tackle unique challenges in underwater photography, helping him capture otherworldly scenes hidden in the dark, below the surface of this planet.
In 2024, Martin published Light in the Underworld, a coffee-table book showcasing Mexico’s breathtaking underwater cave systems. The book was recognized as one of the Ten Best Photography Books of 2024 by Smithsonian Magazine.
