Replay: Being a Conservation Photographer, with Shane Gross

As divers, we’re lucky to witness the beauty of the underwater world—but we also see, up close, the impacts of climate change, pollution and unsustainable fishing practices. While these changes often go unnoticed by the wider public, underwater photographers have a unique ability to inform, inspire, and encourage action through their images.
But how can we use our photography to help protect the environments we care about? And what does it really mean to be a conservation photographer?
During the webinar, we’ve explored these questions with one of the field’s most accomplished voices. Shane Gross—overall winner of Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2024—joined us to discuss some of the conservation stories he has shot, the impact those stories have had, and what he’s learned along the way.
He also offered insight into his photography, including techniques, post-processing, gear choices, and the business side: how he pitches stories, markets himself, gets published, and uses his work to support the ocean and freshwater ecosystems we all love.
Watch the recording to better understand what it means to build a career in conservation photography—and how your images can make a difference.
