Meet Anthony Berberian, a pioneer of blackwater photography in French polynesia. Together with his dive partner Fabien Michenet, they started exploring the deep waters off Tahiti in 2011, at a time where Blackwater dive tourism was virtually inexistent. In 2017, Anthony won the Under Water category of the prestigious NHM Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition, and in 2023 he co-authored a coffee-table on blackwater photography.
Watch this replay and enjoy a fascinating dive into Anthony’s images, where he shared stories about his most memorable encounters, and tips to produce beautiful blackwater images.
Participants absolutely loved Anthony’s insights into how to craft clear blackwater shots in-camera, and the fascinating photographic and biological stories he shared, while commenting over a hundred stunning images.

Meet your speaker
Anthony Berberian is a biologist physician, emergency physician, sports medicine doctor, he graduated in disaster medicine, diving medicine, and hyperbaric medicine. Aside from his medical career, Anthony is also a professional diver, and has taken part in scientific biodiversity survey missions, as a trimix rebreather diver. This included ‘la planète revisitée’ (planet revisited) in Papua New Guinea, and other missions in the Austral Islands, the Marquesas Islands, and New Caledonia. He also participated as a photographer and guide to a National Geographic expedition & documentary on sharks from French Polynesia.
His passion for photography and the underwater world has taken him around the world, leading to the discovery of many new living species not yet described by science, in collaboration with scientists worldwide.
In 2021, he discovered, described, and named several species of jellyfish with Fabien Michenet and Jacqueline Goy from the National Museum of Natural History in Paris. Anthony has contributed to multiple books on marine biodiversity, and two marine species have been named after him (a shell and a nudibranch), in recognition for his work on biodiversity.
An accomplished photographer, Anthony’s most prestigious awards include winning the Underwater category of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2017, as well as being crowned “Best of Show” at the Our World Underwater 2015 competition, plus several awards in Ocean Art.
His photos have been published in numerous international magazines (“Ça m’intéresse” and GEO magazine in France, GEO in Germany and Spain, Discovery Magazine and DIVE in the United States, BBC Wildlife in the United Kingdom, to name a few).
In 2023, he co-authored a coffee-table book with his long-term dive partner Fabien Michenet. “Peuples des Abysses – La grande migration verticale” (People of the Abysses – The Great Vertical Migration). The book celebrates the marine life encountered during blackwater dive off Tahiti, featuring stunning images of rare species and captivating stories about them.

- ✨ “Most of us attending the webinar don’t have blackwater diving in our ‘front yards’ like Anthony does. At best, we might have a few opportunities to try blackwater photography during vacations. I’ve learned more during this webinar about techniques for successful blackwater shooting than I did over three or four practical blackwater sessions, trying to pick the brain of a world-renowned blackwater expert (which left me somewhat frustrated and dissatisfied). After this intensive learning opportunity, I’m keen to try again. The images shared were mind-blowing and very inspiring. Thank you so much, Anthony, Nicolas, and The Underwater Club!” – PT
