We may not all be brave enough to venture inside a flooded cave, but we can learn from the photographic skills which are involved in creating stunning cave diving imagery. In April 2024, that is exactly what we did, with to our guest-speaker Sebastien Delautier, one of the few underwater photographers capable of crafting such images.
While working in some of the most inhospitable environments on earth, Sebastien’s images not only excel at story telling, while being some of the most artistic cave images out there.
During a packed 2 hours talk, Sebastien covered the differences with open-water photography, the meticulous planning and team effort that goes into crafting cave images. He explained his equipment choices in terms of lights, cameras and lenses, covered post-processing, and explained how he and his team setup their lighting, commenting images that involved anywhere from 2 to 10 lights! To wrap things-up, Sebastien unveiled his latest work: 360 degrees cave diving panoramas.

Meet your speaker
With over 17 years of experience as an underwater photographer, Sebastien Delautier transitioned into cave diving in 2018, to explore a new creative environment. This permanent mineral studio in pristine conditions was the starting point for a journey into advanced lighting experiments. Since then, he has carried on documenting underwater caves, several of them rarely seen by the human eye. This calls for complex photo-shoots, requiring high levels of team preparation & engagement, multiple remote lights, all while dealing with the technical constraints of overhead environments.

Topics Covered
We had a fascinating 2h20 dive into Sebastien’s work, where he shared the stories behind his awe-inspiring images from iconic French cave systems. Participants heard about the equipment he uses, his photographic techniques and the extensive planning, team coordination and team effort involved in these underground photoshoots, he touched on images post-processing too.
If the prospect of diving underground isn’t to your liking, this webinar is well worth a re-watch, to learn about remote lighting and working with lighting assistants and models underwater.
As always with events from The Underwater Club, we concluded with a live Q&A session, also recorded.
