A constructive image critique can go a long way in helping a photographer improve and find new inspiration. It’s also a valuable exercise for the person giving the feedback — articulating helpful critique requires unpacking visual emotions and analysing the underlying “why”. It’s a powerful way to train your photographic eye.
In this webinar, members of The Underwater Club had the opportunity to submit their images for collective critique, facilitated by TUC founder Nicolas Remy.
Meet your host
Nicolas Remy is a French-Australian freelance underwater photographer based in Sydney, Australia. He is the founder of The Underwater Club, and an ambassador for Mares and Nauticam.
His images have earned over 40 international awards and have been widely published in both print and digital media. As seasoned photojournalist, Nicolas has written dozens of articles for publications such as DivePhotoGuide, Scuba Diver Magazine, and Plongez!, covering topics including marine life, dive travel, photographic techniques, and equipment reviews.
Nicolas has served as a judge for multiple photography competitions and was Chair of the Jury for the prestigious DPG Masters 2024.

What was the plan for the webinar?
Participants could prepare up to 3 photos to share — sent as a download link via the Club’s contact form. When submitting, they explained what they’d like help with. For example:
- How could I improve this photo?
- What do you think of my lighting?
- Inspire me — how else would you approach this subject?
- Would this work well in black & white?
…and more!
All Club Members were encouraged to provide feedback, which will be extremely valuable to the image authors. Giving thoughtful critique is a learning opportunity in itself — everyone learns and grows in the process. Nicolas was here to assist throughout and offer his own insights to complement the discussion.
