I think your response to what Nicolas has suggested had made your image stand out significantly more and made a overall beautiful image. I believe cropping in allowed the eggs to become more obvious at first glance as for competitions, just remember the judges are looking at thousands of photos, so if they are working hard to see your subjects within the image then its more likely to be dismissed straight away. The images that tend to do well normally stand out from the crowd as a thumbnail and then create further image when at full size so keep that in mind for future competition selections.
