Perhaps I’ll start: I did enter UPY 2024 too, but no luck this year 🤷‍♂️
Aside from judges’ personal tastes, the other thing that we can’t control is the quality of other entrants’ images, and I thought this was quite a strong year for this competition. While it doesn’t change the fact I love my photos, more often than not, I can see why the jury would have picked the winning images over mine. The 1st shot below images is one of these: I am very happy with this photo of leatherjackets devouring a jellyfish, but the jury preferred Eduardo Acevedo’s similar image (rabbitfish eating their own jellyfish). In hindsight, the extra negative space and the nicer water colour were likely why Eduardo’s image was awarded instead.
On the other hand, I’ve entered the below frogfish image in the Macro category, which I thought suited it well. UPY tends to reward experimentation and new techniques, and I don’t think I’ve seen that sort of lighting setup before, so I felt it stood good chances, but alas didn’t make it. Having seen the 10 photos awarded in the Macro category, I still feel my image could have placed and will certainly try it in other contests.
