Hi Murray. Your post really hit home as I’ve struggled with the balance between showing marine subjects as they truly exist and using lighting and/or bokeh to help make them easier to see. I suggest a lot depends on your audience for the photo. If your audience is divers and underwater photographers like myself, we’re going to love your photo. The composition, color and sharpness are all outstanding. It took about 5-10 seconds for the frogfish to “jump out” for me. I enjoyed the thrill of “discovery.” If your audience is the uninitiated on social media they might not have the patience to look for the frogfish and will miss the whole point of your photography. I guess it comes down to your goals for your photography. For me, photography is always a work in progress and I’m trying to rethink how I can best make my work more meaningful for both me and my intended audience.
