A true challenge this month – negative (or complimentary) space that will draw the eye to a striking subject… I love the submissions this month – open aperture gives the images either a soft, dreamy bokeh or blue-greenish background, a true reflection of underwater world. And @marylinerenault ‘s “it’s full of stars” moment is such an innovative take!
But yeah, it wasn’t easy – especially in our silty Singapore waters – to move away from the subject and achieve empty space without a storm of backscatter. @dwerpii so well done on getting a high key bright photo of a goby in these conditions without too many distractions in the frame.
I tried and failed, time and again, so I decided to take a small shortcut. Is it cheating (for this challenge then) if I achieve my negative space simply by cutting the light out with a snoot?
Here’s my snooted negative space. Frankly, I wish I had moved further away from my subjects, especially the pipefish could use more breathing space in front 😅
