My attempt for this challenge.
What I was trying to do: separate nudi from that busy background and get a bit of glow going with backlighting.
Gear & settings: Canon 5DM4 + 8–15mm fisheye in Ikelite housing, 2 × Inon Z-330
1/80, f/14, ISO 200
What worked: pushing one strobe way out on fully extended arm did start to give a hint of edge light and some separation.
What didn’t: Wrong tool for the job. I dived to shoot different subject, so was set for wide-angle. I came across this nudi on my way out, but decided to give it a try. The fisheye and big 8inch dome makes it really hard to keep the strobe out of frame when you try to backlight like this. Limited control, lots of compromises.
Also… the model wasn’t impressed. I spooked her, she tucked in her “bushy tail” and rhinophores, and that was the end of the session.
Still — a good reminder that you can experiment even on the way out of a dive. Next time: macro lens and snoot.
