vignette correction is also a holdover from safari nature competition style rules since its an issue for some longer telephoto lenses, as some lenses have a natural vignette (which is a dark soft visual artefact in the corners of the frame.)
In the Underwater world we also have vignetting from various ports/improper zooms, but unlike dry land, sometimes our port vignetting is “hard” in that its just a black line in the corners where the port has fully blocked light from hitting the sensor… this is not possible to correct (without generative AI at least) because there is no data in the black and should probably be cropped.
