    Looking back at your two versions, I actually prefer the original, for the more visible background and just more satisfying image ratio (the subject better occupies the diagonal).

    I don’t know if you’re familiar with masking, but this would allow you to selectively brighten parts of the image (e.g. the background) without blowing out the hot spots on the algae. If not, check this Lightroom Crash course where masking is covered:
