I have a sweet tooth for any photo that includes the subject’s reflection into the surface, so that’s a big tick for me.
My replies to your questions:
1/ I would prefer more space in front of the manta if available in the RAW? Regardless, try and go for a more horizontal ratio, which would emphasise the reflection => try 3/2 or even 16/10, cutting at the bottom and see if you like it better.
2/ the manta’s outside gills, as they’re the brightest part
3/ I don’t mind the grain (hard to assess at this resolution though), and I feel lots of it is plankton in the mouth no?
Couple more suggestions:
- try and tweak the white balance so the manta is less blue, more white. you won’t get a homogeneous colour because of how the surface ripples impact the lighting, but you probably can make it more neutral, resulting in a richer colour palette.
- if the highlights aren’t burnt, try and bring them down a bit.
