Hi Nina! I have some experience with shooting the EMWL 160, but don’t own one yet myself. What aperture are you using? You definitely need to stop down, which can be a challenge then to light the subject properly, but you also don’t want to take it too far. I have found that f13-f16 is ideal. When you take it to f20-f22 it actually softens the image more by introducing diffraction. I also have found bumping up my ISO helps a bit. I almost always shoot macro at ISO 100 but went up to ISO 800 with the EMWL to help get enough light.
Again, I’m no pro, but have done several dives with one and I understand your frustration with the softness of the images. Hope this helps a bit!
PS – I shoot it with the Sony 90mm on my a7rv and 2 retra pro flash strobes pulled forward. I also prefer to shoot it with a monitor and not a relay bc I’m convinced shooting through all that glass also impacts image quality!
