I’d love to give you a clear cut answer, but subject manipulation is…. subjective 🙂
You’re asking in the context of photographic competitions, and I’d suggest to first read the competition’s rules about ethics, where you might find some clarity, but chances are you won’t.
Personally, I wouldn’t approve awarding a photo where an animal was moved against its will – this would be my definition.
I am OK with a dive guide approaching their stick near a shrimp, so that the shrimp turns slightly towards the photographer, as long as it is not touch and as long as it isn’t done repetitively.
Curious to hear what your point of view is, and that of other members?
