Hi Dawn …. I have had the EMWL system for a few years now and happy to give a few tips as you progress – Nicolas has lots of experience with the set up too.
My set up was originally for a cropped sensor D500 – I used the 100 degree optic and it has been great. It is not as good on my D850 and the 160 would be better. If I were making the choice now between the 100, 130 and 160 I would certainly go down the 160 degree route. Although I thought the 160 was considerably dearer.
For me that bug eye perspective is what the EMWL is all about — it really gives a unique perspective.
When I take the EMWL out, I am looking for subjects that suit the set up – something I can get very close too and with enough size to give that real fisheye effect – like a crocodile fish, moray, turtle etc. I have attached a recent example of moray and porcupine fish. In very clear water a wide angle reef shot is possible.
Personally I have the relay and I do not find it too difficult to handle – additional flotation needed on the strobe arms but once set up it actually not as cumbersome as it looks.
Maybe on the A7RIV you have an option to flip the view – if yes – no relay needed.
There are quirks – the white balance tends to yellow but easily fixed in post and beware of particles between the connections – they can appear are black “blobs” in shots!
It is a great system, albeit very expensive!!
Cheers John
