It again goes to show that (underwater) photography is so subjective! That’s why whenever I do a portfolio review, or advise someone with selecting photos for competitions, that my feedback is only one personal opinion. For me, the value of peer feedback or mentor feedback is to offer a different perspective on the image, possibly highlighting something the author didn’t think about or realise on the photo. However, if you as the author don’t agree with that extra point of view, just trust your instincts.
For that reason I love seeing other TUC members share feedbacks on images in these forums, whether or not I already wrote one!
On this particular image though, I 100% agree with the vertical version, because for me it prolongs the confusion of that photo being ‘just’ a portrait, and makes the ‘shock’ of realising what’s going on bigger.
