Congratulations on this first award, hopefully many more to come!

Monochrome photography is a genre that I find highly subjective, and I know I call fall in love with a shot that others might deem “not a real black & white”, and vice-versa.

So, do take my feedback with a big pinch of salt, and I hope other members will share their views.

With all that said, I think the jury liked the symmetry and bold choice of leaving heaps of negative space, making the whale ironically look small.

I think this encounter would look even better with a tighter crop, and in portrait orientation (keeping the symmetry), but that might be past your GoPro’s file size.

As a black & white though, I’d say it lacks overall contrast as-is, but hey, it has received an award so it did trigger the jury’s emotions positively 🙂
