I had a travel laptop where the track pad tilted at a weird angle but otherwise worked fine. I thought this was a problem with the mounting for the track pad. I took the laptop in for service (I have a maintenance plan) and the technician told me that the lithium battery was beneath the track pad and had swelled – and was in danger of catastrophic failure. This could have resulted in a fire – or worse – especially if it had been in an overhead bin on a long flight. The battery replacement was not expensive and a lesson not to ignore any problem with electronic gear.
