Hi Nicolas
Yes the false stonefish / Devil scorpionfish was a very cool find!! I also had a really good encounter with a tiny (maybe 8mm) Cling fish that left its host crinoid and came in for a close look into my Nikon 105mm! Once I go though it all I will post up a shot.
I have gone back to raw files of the scorpionfish where I was trying at f6.3 – all iso 64, shot 1 at 1/200 shots 2 and 3 at 1/250. Obviously these are easily rectified in post and my edited versions are entirely better. I was not happy with the focus in any case and was experimenting with different settings on each strobe – had great results by experimenting with different strobe positions and power on each strobe. The fast recycle at lower powers was just great for the yawn shots!
I had reduced the strobe power to the minimum stetting as when I reviewed underwater the overexposure was obvious. What I did not do is as you suggested – pulling the strobes out and back and I agree that would make a big difference as I had them in pretty tight to the port. I had the focus light on low but that would be eliminated by the shutter speed in any case?
Like all new gear there is a break in period but I am not unhappy with this decision! ! I just got a call half an hour ago saying my warmer diffusers are here — will be out trying those on the weekend!
Cheers
John
