I know what you mean with the weight of the Pelicans, I had one 15 years ago that I sold for that reason.
The new “Air” Pelican cases are a bit lighter, my Pelican Air 1637 weighs “only” 8.8kg.
In comparison, if I use a light-weight suitcase of an approaching volume, such as the Samsonites, they are about 4.5-5kg. So the Pelican punishment is only 4kg.
Now consider the weight of all the individual pouches/padded lens/ports/housing bags, they are not so light and bridge some of that gap.
Back to Pelican, I don’t like the carved foam because it limits your ability to re-configure. I prefer padded dividers, especially the 1637 has 2 layers. I’ve just found photos of my packing for a trip to Lembeh/Bangka, here they are.
